Dwelling Spaces
Dwelling Spaces represent the more commercial and mainstream architectural creations of Avatrian in the virtual world. Recent advances in sciences, communications, building and industrial materials along with innovations in the computer, electronic, and information and communications technology sector, have effected and in many cases, transformed the traditional concepts of living spaces and architecture, leading us to ponder new questions and ideas. For Dwelling Spaces, we attempt to capture these new trends in the way we build our structures. Our collection includes residential homes, office buildings, bridges, industrial complexes, and cityscapes that are inspired by today's most cutting edge designs.
At present, the Dwelling Spaces area of the Avatrian Central sim has four modern/minimal houses that are open for viewing:
- The Wenger House - Based on a real world wood cabin designed to be built on the slopes of the Alps, the Wenger House captures the essence of the traditional small and cozy log cabin. It has been upgraded for a more modern and stylish feel. Hints of oriental influences such as the sunken dining area in the main room are present in the interior. The house can be completely locked down and closed for simulated blizzards and snowstorms.
- The Black Box House - the Black Box House is a design that hails from the era of Modernism in Architecture, with it's clean, simple lines that define space in precise angles and symmetric features in both the interior and exterior
- The Zachary House - This design is largely inspired by a real cabin designed by Stephen Atkinson. It was originally intended as a retreat house for priests. It features a structure clad in galvanized metal. The central space is extended as a deck on the east and west sides. This gives the plan a cruciform design.
- The Down Under House - A tower-like minimalist design, the Down Under House is aimed at space-saving without compromising a fresh look. It works well as a contemporary human dwelling. The elevated floor design is reminiscent of oriental houses that are built on stilts. But, it was based on a real house in the Outbacks of Australia that was created and built by merely two people...a father and son. At the time of writing, they still reside at the house that they built.
- The Cobweb Tower - Inspired by the award-winning design for the Eyebeam Museum of Art and Technology, this imposing building features a cutting-edge design. Modifications were made to the exterior and interior in order to enhance its functionality in the Second Life environment. A giant sculpture of an Orb Weaver spider is also incorporated in the exterior as a primary visual element. The structure is modern but can be used for multiple purposes in the virtual world.
